DIRECTOR OF THE JUNIOR K PROGRAM: KATIE KARNER

The Academy Junior Kindergarten class runs Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon.  It is for children 4 to 5 years of age who have either had some prior Preschool or Pre-K experience or otherwise demonstrate an ability to sit and focus on specific lessons for 15 to 20 minute time periods.  Class size is a maximum of 10 students.

The curriculum is based on Core Knowledge and includes:

Language Development

  • Emerging literacy skills in reading and writing

  • Oral language

  • Storybook reading and storytelling

Knowledge Acquisition and Cognitive Development

  • Mathematical reasoning and number sense

  • Orientation in time

  • Orientation in space

  • Scientific reasoning and the physical world

  • Music

  • Art

Physical Well-Being and Motor Development

  • Movement and coordination

Social and Emotional Development

  • Autonomy and social skills

Approaches to Learning

  • Work habits

In addition to Core Knowledge and Junior K curriculum includes:

  • Spanish

  • Drama

  • Dance and Movement

  • Library Time

  • International Culture

  • Ethics/non-competitive games

  • Field trips to reinforce drama, art, science and social studies  

 

SENIOR KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM

 

  DIRECTOR OF THE SENIOR K PROGRAM:  KRISTIN WILSON

The Academy Senior Kindergarten class is an all day program from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Senior Kindergarten is for five- to six- year-old students who usually have had prior Preschool and/or Pre-Kindergarten experience.  The students should be ready to focus on specific lessons and understand and follow directions from the teachers.  Class size is a maximum of 10 students.
